Course Description

The Sacraments module is one of the core modules for the Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies (CCRS). The module offers an understanding and appreciation of the sacraments as a sign of Christ's continuing presence within the Church and recognises the symbolic use of word and action in daily life. It appreciates the sacraments as celebrations of the covenant relationship between Christ and the Church.  Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist are presented as the sacraments of Christian initiation, while the relevance and purpose of all seven sacraments in the universal call to holiness and vocation is explored.

Seven topics will address the following themes:
• Introducing the sacraments: Baptism
• Jesus as sacrament: Confirmation
• Signs and symbols: Eucharist
• The sacramental economy:  Reconciliation
  • Sacraments and grace: Marriage
• Why seven sacraments? Holy Orders
• Sacraments as signs of the Kingdom: Anointing of the Sick
