Detailed Description

Support Fund For Palestinian Young People to Travel and Take part in 'Big Hope 2'

In June 2018 Liverpool Hope University is running a week long conference, 'The Big Hope 2', for future global leaders in their communities. The intention is for young people from across the world to come to Liverpool and take part in the event, listening to a range of global leaders and taking part in debates on some of the pressing issues of our age.

Young people (or their organisations) will have to fund their attendance at the event. However, this means that some young community leaders will be excluded on financial grounds.

As part of the Department of Social Work, Care and Justice's commitment to social justice, we have decided that we will try to raise money to bring 10 young Palestinian refugees to Liverpool to take part in the conference and enjoy a further week exploring our region.

The children will come from the Tulkarem refugee camp - where some of our students stay as part of our regular departmental trip to the West Bank.

The young Palestinians will not be able to travel on the most direct route (via Tel Aviv). Instead, because of restrictions placed on Palestinian movement by the Israeli state, they will have to travel to Jordan and then fly from Amman.

For the conference, their travel and an additional week in Britain we estimate that it will cost £20,000 for 10 students.

Thus we have set a fund-raising target of £20,000.

Any monies received will go direct to the fund to support the Palestinian young people at the event.

If you are a UK tax payer, you will be able to 'gift aid' your donation.

If your organisation raises or offers money - and would like one, or some, of the group to come and speak with you when they are in the country, we will try to facilitate this. Inquiries about meetings you would like them to attend in June 2018 can be arranged via Professor Michael Lavalette on lavalem@hope.ac.uk.
