The five sessions will be devoted to:

1. Conversion in its historical setting (from the Bible to the Talmud);

2. The conversion process in post-Talmudic sources (esp. the emphasis on the convert’s motivation), including historical material such as the Khazar conversions;

3. Conversion Out of Judaism, with historical material from the Christian, Muslim and Holocaust contexts; its effects within both Jewish law and secular law (including Israel’s Law of Return);

4. Conversion as a life changing event, including the impact on and relations with family and community;

5.Contemporary problems in conversion: recognition of conversions (and conversion authorities); retrospective annulment of conversion; Orthodox and non-Orthodox conversions; conversion and the Race Relations Act (the JFS case in England).
